Pitch Black Imperial Stout

Imperial Stout

Characteristics:
Pitch Black Imperial Stout is a beer fit for a Russian Queen – this barrel aged Imperial Stout is all about malt, perfect served  served either chilled or at 10-15 º C for full hit of flavour.

Tasting Notes:

Here the coffee chocolate accents Pitch Black fans have come to expect are augmented with hints of vanilla from the Oak barrel. Lightly hopped, the beautiful, rich flavour and mouthfeel makes this a perfect after-dinner sipper, which will only improve with age.

Black Story:

Five years in the conceptual stage and six months in the brewing – there’s certainly been no rushing this little beauty.

Head Brewer Steve Nally first attempted the style on Christmas Eve 2007.  When, days later,  he propped up the lid of the old open fermenter to check on progress ,an untimely sneeze from a brewery visitor contaminated the entire batch.  A week later he was pouring the infected beer down the drain.

The final recipe meant doubling the ingredients of our gold medal Pitch Black stout (stuck the mash), then added a dollop of flaked barley and wheat, we barrel aged it for in Central Otago pinot noir Oak for three months .
